As part of Butler's Learning in Washington program, I will be teaching a short seminar titled "Journalism, Citizens and Democracy" on Feb. 3-5. Here is a short course description:
"While an abundance of information is available to citizens in the 21st century, it is becoming more and more difficult to evaluate, synthesize and verify this information in search of the truth. The changing media environment poses many challenges to the news industry --- challenges that further complicate the important relationship between journalism, citizens and democracy. Not only are we seeing the explosion of new media platforms that allow user-generated content, but media concentration, conglomeration and globalization are increasingly threatening the political function of the news media. This seminar will explore these challenges through the lens of the Freedom Forum’s interactive news museum, the Newseum, in Washington, D.C."
